Abstract
Circular economy (CE) is a relatively new economic model which has the potential to achieve the resource circularity to lessen waste, increase capital efficiency and promote sustainability by shifting away from the linear take-make-dispose economy. This suggests a particular emphasis on recycling, re-using, re-manufacturing and designing to be durable. The transformation towards a CE is one of the biggest challenges and opportunities for all sectors, including the financial sector which has a huge role in ensuring that this transition will take place at all. Circular business models are scaled up through the support of finance for research, innovation and infrastructure. There are financial instruments that are assisting this transition, such as green bonds, sustainability linked loans and impact investing. Also, integrating the principles of circular economy to assess financial risk can help institutions in mitigating risks related to resource scarcity, regulations and climate challenges. However, the relationship between finance and circular economy is still an early stage one. Factors like fragmentation in policies, rate of investor cognizance and standardization on metrics are obstacles to common adoption. To overcome these obstacles, collaboration between many sectors will be required and policy frameworks and financing tools specific to circular projects will have to be created. This academic article focuses on the relationship between circular economy and finance, and the possibility of creating sustainable value, durability and a green economy. It demonstrates how critical financial systems are to transform and align with CE as sustainable finance has potential (NAI/AIT) to support a just and resource efficient transition.
