Cernavoda Unit 1 refurbishment project

Abstract
Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 is a CANDU 6 nuclear unit that has been in commercial operation since 1996. The plant lifetime is primarily limited by key reactor components, including fuel channels, calandria tubes, and feeder assemblies. Under current operating conditions, the technical end of life for these components will be reached in 2027. The Unit 1 Refurbishment Project aims to extend the operational life of the unit by an additional 30 years through a comprehensive retubing and refurbishment program. This paper presents the scope, technical solutions, and modernization strategy implemented within the refurbishment project, highlighting improvements in nuclear safety, reliability, and long-term performance in compliance with regulatory and international industry standards.
