IoT-Enabled Smart Sanitation Management Framework for High-Density Urban Areas: A Sustainable Urban Infrastructure Approach

Abstract
With the rapid urbanization in emerging cities, the pressure on municipal sanitation infrastructure has grown significantly. This leads to solid waste accumulation in urban areas due to inefficient collection systems, overflowing community bins, and pollution. Traditional sanitation management is based on manual monitoring and the scheduled collection routes, making it difficult to respond on time and its implementation may be expensive. This study proposes an IoT-enabled Smart Sanitation Management Framework for high-density areas of Gadchiroli Municipal Council (GMC), Maharashtra, as a case study. Through smart waste bins equipped with ultrasonic level sensors, gas sensors, GPS modules, and wireless communication technology, the solution will be available to monitor the sanitation facility in real time. The data from the field sensors is transmitted to a cloud platform for predictive analytics for route optimization and maintenance planning. The proposed system aims at high collection efficiency, low fuel consumption, low overflow, and citizen satisfaction. Based on the performance data, waste collection efficiency and operational time improvement have been shown and the overall environmental management is high. The study indicates that smart sanitation technologies have the potential to help in the development of sustainable urban infrastructure and sustainable city development.
