Creep response of granular materials

Abstract
We present an experimental study of creep deformation measured in a dry granular material submitted to a constant deviatoric stress smaller than its failure threshold. We observe creep deformation leading to material failure. An interferometric method of measurement of local strain allows us to observe how strain self-organizes in the sample from homogeneously distributed local plastic events to localization of the deformation in shear bands.
