Energy management strategy with maximum grid consumption level and supplementary energy sources for grid-connected charging stations

Abstract
The expanding growth of electric vehicle (EV) adoption and the expansion of charging infrastructure introduce new operational challenges for low-voltage distribution networks. To mitigate potential grid overload and stability issues, this paper proposes an advanced energy management strategy (EMS) for grid-connected charging stations equipped with optimally sized local energy resources. The developed control algorithm operates with a 15-minute resolution, enabling real-time optimization of power exchange between the grid and complementary energy sources. By enforcing predefined maximum grid consumption limits, the proposed strategy effectively reduces the dependency on external power supply and alleviates stress on the electrical network. The EMS was simulated and evaluated on two types of charging stations (residential and public), demonstrating its ability to maintain stable operation while supporting efficient and sustainable EV charging.
