Galaxy modelling through stellar population synthesis

In recent years, models of the Galaxy based on the spirit of population synthesis have considerably helped to improve our knowledge on the Galaxy and its formation scenario. I describe the different approaches used by several teams, how they differ, and present the significant advances which have been made through this approach using two examples: the thick disc and the bulge/bar populations.
