In recent years, models of the Galaxy based on the spirit of population synthesis have considerably helped to improve our knowledge on the Galaxy and its formation scenario. I describe the different approaches used by several teams, how they differ, and present the significant advances which have been made through this approach using two examples: the thick disc and the bulge/bar populations.
