Study on the application of dynamic line rating in a medium voltage distribution network

Abstract
The increasing amount of renewable energy connected to distribution networks can increase the loading of some overhead lines (OHLs). In such situations, static line rating (SLR) may limit normal network operation and the evacuation of generated power. This paper investigates the application of dynamic line rating (DLR) in a medium-voltage distribution network with connected electricity producers. The analysis is performed based on steady-state simulations, in which the power generated by a photovoltaic (PV) power plant is kept constant, while the ampacity of the OHLs is calculated according to weather conditions. The meteorological data are real and obtained from the NASA POWER database for a region in southeastern Romania. The results show that the use of DLR reduces line loading and allows line capacity to be used more efficiently, without requiring changes to the network or a reduction in generated power.
