Abstract
Pipeline networks form the backbone of energy and water distribution systems. These networks are subject to leaks, environmental degradation, and security threats that affect their function. Monitoring pipeline networks is an important concern that needs proper attention. Traditional monitoring systems rely on manual inspection or SCADA-based infrastructures. However, these solutions have limitations, they are basically expensive, limited in coverage, and have a late response time. Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is an attractive solution that allows smart pipeline monitoring in a continuous and real-time manner. This paper provides a conceptual overview of WSN-based pipeline monitoring systems, focusing on their architecture, benefits, challenges, providers, applications, and future trends.
