- J. Linsley, PICRC Jaipur 1963 Vol 4 77. In answer to a question by Colgate (p 86), Linsley pushes protons rather less strongly than is argued in J Linsley and L Scarsi, Phys. Rev. Letters 9 123 (1962). In that work, a discrimination between protons and iron was attempted based on a measurement of shower development at large angles. Protons appeared to be favoured in this energy range. While I do not recall Linsley ever withdrawing the 1962 claim, he was a man who was particularly careful in his use of words, and the 1963 remarks may well have represented his more mature view.
