Evaporation-residue cross sections: role of the entrance channel

In the context of the creation of heavy evaporation residues, the interplay between capture, quasiﬁssion and true compound-nucleus ﬁssion is discussed. An approximate factorisation of the cross section into a compound nucleus term and an entrance-channel term is derived, with each of these terms being clearly deﬁned.
